Bible Study: Righteousness

What does it mean that the righteous shall be blessed.  Blessed means to be happy.  Everyone desires to be happy, and it is our God-given right to be happy and pursue happiness.  In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus teaches us how to find true happiness.

If you read the scriptures it says in order to be happy you must be righteous.  But how do we become righteous.  Righteousness according to the Word of God is believing the Gospel and making Jesus our Lord and personal Savior.  You cannot be righteous just by doing good works and having high morals.  Jesus tells us this in Ephesians 2:8, or by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; not of works; lest any man should boast.

Righteousness is imparted to us the moment that you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and become born again.  His grace saved us from all unrighteousness.  His death and resurrection freed us from all our sin and unrighteousness.  It is a free gift you receive through believing by faith!  Romans 4:24 says that, But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead.

Like the scripture says in Matthew 5:6, you must hunger and thirst for His righteousness and you will be filled with it.  How do you hunger and thirst, Matthew 6:33 says, But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.  Seeking His Kingdom means to find out by meditating, reasoning and inquiring into something.  Spending time in your Bible and listening to the Lord’s voice.  Meditate on His word.  Apply it to your life.  Get the truth of the Word into your spirit.

As a righteous person you should reverentially fear God.  You should love God’s word and delight in it.  You should keep your heart right with God and be gracious and compassionate to others.  When you are righteous, you  walk in peace and authority.  Not afraid of evil because the Word of the Lord is in you, guiding you.  You will not be shaken because you choose to believe the Word of God over what you see in the natural.  You will have understanding, direction and a purpose over every situation.

The Bible says that His righteousness will endure forever (Psalm 112:9).  It is untouched and unharmed by time and circumstances.  This righteousness is yours when you draw near to God through obedience to the gospel of the Lord.  He is your rock and your salvation and the only source of true and lasting happiness.  Things may come and go, but God never changes.

Delight in the Lord’s righteousness by obeying His word (Matthew 7:21).  That’s the way to true and lasting happiness.  He alone offers a righteousness that endures for all eternity.
