Have you ever sang the song Ancient of Days and wondered what it means? In today’s bible study we are going to look into what Ancient of Days means.
Ancient of Days is mentioned in Daniel chapter 7, where Daniel is describing his vision of heaven. He describes God sitting of a flaming throne with hair and cloths that were as white as snow, and the throne had wheels of fire. The flaming throne is symbolic of judgment while his description of God’s white hair and beard represent that God existed before time.
You find evidence that God existed before time in Isaiah 43;13, which says, Even from eternity I am He, and there is none who can deliver out of my hand; I act and who can reverse it? Genesis 1 tells you that God created time, days and nights, so He existed before time. He is also “everlasting to everlasting” (Psalm 90:2) and the “first and the last” (Isaiah 44:6).
In Daniel 7:13, which says, I kept looking in the night vision, and behold, with clouds of heaven one like a Son of Man was coming. Here he is prophesying that Jesus the Son of Man, the Messiah was coming to pronounce judgment on the world. Which is evident in Daniel 7:22, Until the Ancient of Days come and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest one, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the Kingdom.
Ancient of Days are a way of describing that God is a firsthand spectator to the past, present, and future. In the vision that Daniel is having, you see a transfer of power between God and Jesus. God is heavy hearted in this vision for those who choose not to believe in Him and obey. God is giving authority to the Son of Man. He is giving Jesus the keys to the kingdom that never ends. He is sharing His Glory with His son because of His obedience in coming to earth and sacrificing His life for you so that you may be made new in Christ.
Jesus is our rightful judge. When this earth passes away and the new Heaven and earth are established, all the dead and living will stand before God’s throne. The book of life will be open and judgment will be at hand. Daniel 7:10 says that, A river of fire was flowing and coming out from before Him, thousands upon thousands were attending Him, and myriads upon myriads were standing before Him, the court sat, and the books were opened.
Do not be troubled by the events you see unfolding around you. Remember that the victory has already been won. God is in control of the past, present, and future. Rely on your faith to trust in God. He sees and knows everything. The evil that you see today will be no more and they will stand before Him and be judged for all they have done. Do not fear, but be joyful that He is the Ancient of Days. He will rule forever!
